A feeling like after a professional tooth cleaning - every morning and every evening? Almost impossible with conventional toothbrushes. Choosing the right toothbrush is therefore an important factor in taking better care of your teeth.
There are so many different toothbrushes that consumers can quickly become overwhelmed. There are manual toothbrushes, sonic toothbrushes or oscillating toothbrushes. One mistake and it can happen that you are unsure whether you are really doing the best for your teeth.
Recently, the electric sonic toothbrush has come to the fore in the dental and oral care industry. More and more dentists are recommending the sonic toothbrush and are convinced of the advantages.
But how exactly does this electric sonic toothbrush work and what can it offer me in contrast to other models? You can find out that and more in this post.
1. How the sonic toothbrush works
You probably already know the well-known electric toothbrush with a rotating head. Sonic toothbrushes, on the other hand, work via a sound generator. It is operated magnetically or by a so-called piezo element, which then generates vibrations. The vibrations generated are in turn transmitted to the bristles of the brush head. So, in the end, your teeth will still be cleaned by the bristle movement, and not by the sound itself. However, this is different with ultrasonic toothbrushes. Feel free to read our post comparing sonic vs ultrasonic toothbrushes here .
2. What should you pay attention to when it comes to cleaning power?
With a sonic toothbrush, the vibrations per minute and the amplitude or vibration deflection of the bristles are decisive for good and effective tooth cleaning.
Sonic toothbrushes with vibrations of 30,000 to 40,000 per minute are completely sufficient for a good tooth cleaning. This means that the frequency is around ten times higher than that of a rotary toothbrush. Incidentally, you only achieve about 500 vibrations per minute with a manual toothbrush .
But be careful, a higher number of vibrations does not necessarily mean that the sonic toothbrush is better. From 40,000 vibrations per minute, the increasing number can also be accompanied by an unpleasant feeling for the user, both for the teeth and for the gums. We therefore recommend a frequency of just under 40,000 rpm for the optimal balance between cleanliness and safety.
However, not only the number of vibrations per minute is important, but also the amplitude (vibration deflection). Three to four millimeters are recommended here.
3. The right application
The great thing about the sonic toothbrush is not only the cleaning power, but also the ease of use. Basically, the application does not differ much from other electric toothbrushes. You brush from red (gums) to white (your teeth) in even up and down movements. You should not exert too much pressure and clean slowly along the rows of teeth. The work should be mainly done by the sonic toothbrush itself.
The ideal brushing time is two minutes. To do this, divide your rows of teeth into four "jaw quadrants" and brush each part for 30 seconds. It is important to brush the outer surface, chewing surface (front teeth are excluded here), as well as the inner surface of the rows of teeth. Good sonic toothbrushes have a 30-second interval timer, which gives you even cleaning results.
The angle at which you guide your sonic toothbrush along your row of teeth is also crucial. Ideally, you should place the bristles at a 45° angle at the point where the teeth are no longer covered by the gums. This allows the leftovers that are often stuck there to be removed.
4. Are sonic toothbrushes also suitable for children?
Dentists recommend that children and toddlers first learn how to brush their teeth with a manual toothbrush. A good mnemonic for the little ones is the "KAI rule". KAI stands for chewing surface, outer surface and inner surface. This makes it easy to remember which areas to clean.
However, science shows us that sonic toothbrushes are very good at removing stains and plaque from teeth. So if your child has already mastered the basic brushing technique, we recommend buying a sonic toothbrush to keep their teeth healthy and clean. We are currently developing a sonic toothbrush with bamboo brush heads , which has been specially designed to be child-friendly, both in terms of look and use. 5. Use for sensitive gums, periodontal disease or implants
The good user-friendliness and the low pressure of the sonic toothbrush significantly reduces the risk of injury in the mouth. Especially people who suffer from the above complaints benefit immensely.
The elongated shape of the brush head enables a pleasant cleaning of the teeth without hitting and possibly injuring the gums. With rotary toothbrushes with the typical round attachments, part of the bristles often come into contact with the gums and can cause irritation.
Conclusion and recommendation
The sonic toothbrush is a real all-rounder. Regardless of whether you have a sensitive mouth or simply want to remove dirt as best as possible, the sonic toothbrush is suitable for everyone.
